Mechanical polished concrete

Simon and his team at Impact Surface Solutions finished this commercial Mechanically polished concrete project in Redland Bay, Brisbane recently.

We asked Simon a few questions about Mechanically polished concrete to help you understand it better…

Mechanical polished concrete process

What is Mechanical polished concrete?

Simon says – Mechanical polished concrete is a process used to refine and enhance the surface of concrete floors. It involves using mechanical grinders equipped with diamond abrasives to grind, hone, and polish the surface of the concrete. The process typically involves multiple steps of grinding with progressively finer grit abrasives until the desired level of smoothness and shine is achieved.

Can Mechanical polished concrete be done on all concrete types?

Simon says – Mechanical polished concrete can generally be applied to most types of concrete, including new and existing concrete floors. However, the suitability of the concrete for polishing depends on various factors, including its age, condition, composition, and hardness.

Is polished concrete hard to maintain?

Simon says – Polished concrete is generally easy to maintain compared to other flooring options, but the level of maintenance required can depend on factors such as the environment, traffic, and use of the space. Here are some considerations regarding the maintenance of polished concrete:

Regular Cleaning: Routine cleaning is essential to keep polished concrete floors looking their best. Sweeping or dust mopping daily to remove dirt and debris helps prevent scratches and maintains the floor’s shine.

Mopping: Periodic mopping with a neutral pH cleaner and water is recommended to remove any stains or spills. Avoid using acidic or abrasive cleaners, as they can dull or damage the surface.

Sealing: While polished concrete is inherently durable, it still requires sealing. To complete the polishing system we apply a high performance penetrating sealer to provide additional protection against stains and moisture penetration.

Scratch Prevention: While polished concrete is resistant to scratches, heavy furniture or sharp objects dragged across the surface can cause scratches or dull spots. Felt pads or protective mats can help prevent damage in high-traffic areas.
